
The animal appears as an addenda in the first (1790) edition, and is described as follows:
The American Elk of which we here give a faithful portrait from a living one lately brought from the interior parts of America, seems to be a different animal from that generally described under the name of the Elk or Moose-Deer, to which it has very little resemblance. It seems, indeed, to belong to a distinct species; and is probably the Elk or Original of Canada and the Northern parts of America.
